nanda palmieri

My work is about the enduring and unavoidable demands of the body, the pull of matter on matter. The enormous pastries or mounds of ice cream in my paintings are at once seductive and discomfiting. In these depictions of food, the objects function as characters that evoke the body and flesh. They are simultaneously humorous, beautiful and grotesque in their out-sized lusciousness. The visceral quality of oil paint amplifies these themes. The paint both coalesces into a recognizable image at a distance and dissolves into itself up close. My work attempts to tap into both the profundity and ridiculousness of our physically embodied condition, as it explores issues of sustenance, consumption, pleasure and desire.
